demographic features in districts of Eastern Uttar Pradesh

The state of Uttar Pradesh has been divided into four regions – Western, Central, Southern and Eastern. The region of eastern Uttar Pradesh comprises Bahraich, Gonda, Basti, Gorakhpur, Deoria, Ballia, Azamgarh, Faizabad, Sultanpur, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Varanasi, Mirzapur, Allahabad and Pratapgarh districts. It covers in area of 85,803 sq/km. The region of Eastern Uttar Pradesh is located between 23050` N to 28025`N and 81010`E to 84040`E. Some of the districts comprising the region in recent past have been bifurcated into separate administrative units by creation of new districts for example: Sidharthnagar, Mau, Sonbhadra etc. The region of eastern Uttar Pradesh districts demographic profile presents features and characteristics of population of the districts. It is focuses at analysis of inter and intra districts comparisons. It presents rural and urban segments of the population also. The share of schedule caste and schedule tribe population in total population, analysis of the population according to sex, literacy among male and female etc. Demographic profile also presents workers and non workers. Occupational profile cultivators agricultural labourers and other workers, sex ratio, etc. The data source is census 2001 Government of India.
Demographic Profile:
The characteristics of population of the districts included with study. The percentage of the male population is higher in comparison to female population ranging between 53.6% in Bahraich to 50.5% in Sultanpur districts. Female population is higher than male population in Azamgarh, Deoria, Jaunpur and Pratapgarh districts. The percentage of rural population ranges between 95.3% in Sultanpur and 59.8% in Varanasi. The composition of male and female population in villages differ from district to district ranging between 53.62% in Bahraich and 49.32% in Azamgarh is significant to note that male population in urban centers is more the 51% in all districts and it ranges between 55.02% in Allahabad, to 51.76% in Azamgarh districts. The percentage of pre – school children ranges between 20.2% in Azamgarh to 18.2% in Allahabad in all districts under consideration is more than 50%, it range between 51.6% in Allahabad to 50.77% in Bahraich. The share of schedule caste population ranges between26.8% in Mirzapur to 13.9% in Varanasi. The share of male population among schedule castes is more than 50% in all districts, except Azamgarh, Jaunpur and Pratapgarh. In Uttar Pradesh the percentage of schedule tribes is substantially

low and it ranges between 0.3% in Bahraich to 0.01% in Pratapgarh, Gonda, Faizabad, Ballia etc. The share of male population among schedule castes is higher than the female population in all districts except Bahraich, Faizabad Pratapgarh and Ballia, and it ranges between 54.88% in Varanasi to 46.32% in Faizabad district.
Sex Ratio:
Sex ratio in demographic analysis is number of female per 1000 males. Sex ratio for the districts range between 1020 in Azamgarh to 867 in Bahraich districts. In Azamgarh, Deoria, Jaunpur and Pratapgarh districts the sex ratio is more than 1000 indicating number of female is more than number of male. Sex ratio of 0-6 years population ranges
between 970 in Bahraich to 917 Allahabad districts. It indicates that number of girl child is 0-6 years is has declined and in none of the districts it crosses more than one thousand. Sex ratio amongst schedule of the total population and is ranges between 856 in Bahraich to 1040 in Azamgarh districts. Sex ratio amongst schedule tribe is different than sex ratio of the general population and it is 1028 in Bahraich, 1159 in Faizabad and 1065 in Pratapgarh, and it ranges between 750 in Gonda to 1159 in Faizabad districts.
Literacy Demographic profile:
Literacy in region eastern Uttar Pradesh districts ranges between 66.1% in Varanasi to 35.2% in Bahraich districts. Literacy in Gonda and Bahraich districts are on the lower side. The literacy amongst male population ranges between 77.9% in Varanasi to 45.6% in Bahraich districts. Literacy amongst male is more than 70% in Allahabad, Azamgarh, Ballia, Deoria, Ghazipur, Gorakhpur, Jaunpur, Pratapgarh, Sultanpur and Varanasi districts. Female literacy is generally lower than male literacy in all districts of Eastern
Uttar Pradesh and it ranges between 53%in Varanasi to 22.8% in Bahraich districts.
Working and Occupational Demographic profile:
Workers are most important component of population. In demographic analysis population is classified under workers and non workers. The share of workers in region eastern Uttar Pradesh districts range between 28.5% in Deoria to 39.4% in Faizabad. The total workers are engaged different occupation. The occupation based on classification is cultivators(Cult), agricultural laboureres(Ag.L), worker in household industry(WHI) and other workers(OW). The share of cultivator varies between 59.7% in Gonda to 21.1% in Varanasi districts. It is more than 50% in Bahraich, Gonda and Jaunpur. The share of agricultural labourers ranges between 40.1% in Ballia to 10.4% in Varanasi districts.
The share of agricultural labourers is more than 35% in Gorakhpur and Ballia districts. Workers in households industry range between 22.6 % in Varanasi to 2.2 % in Bahraich
districts. It is indicative of cottage and household industry based economic activity. It is more than 10% in Varanasi and Mirzapur districts. The other worker ranges between 45.8% in Varanasi to 13.7% in Gonda districts.
Conclusion:
The male population is higher in comparison to female population in all districts except Azamgarh, Deoria, Jaunpur and Pratapgarh districts. In eastern Uttar Pradesh districts substantial population resides in villages. In Azamgarh, Deoria, Jaunpur and Pratapgarh districts the female sex ratio is greater than rest of other districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Female literacy is generally lower than male literacy in all districts of Eastern Uttar Pradesh only for more than 50% Varanasi. Lastly conclude that the demographic features are presents quality of life in under study area.
